The GOD'S CHILD Project in Guatemala, Central America

Patrick Atkinson honored by mayors' association

Patrick Atkinson, the founder and international executive director of The GOD’S CHILD Project, was recognized Friday by la Asociacion de Municipalidades de Sacatepequez (AMSAC) for his social work in Guatemala. The group, comprised of the 16 mayors in that department of the country, picked Atkinson and The GOD’S CHILD Project to receive the special achievement award as recognition for the nearly 20 years of charitable work Atkinson and The GOD’S CHILD Project have provided in the area. AMSAC honored Atkinson and The GOD’S CHILD Project were presented with an award in front of a crowd of distinguished political, social, diplomatic and nonprofit organization guests that Atkinson has worked with throughout the years. The entire Guatemalan staff of The GOD’S CHILD Project was also present for the ceremony.

Rains continue taking toll on Guatemala

Three months after Tropical Storm Agatha struck Guatemala a devastating blow- leaving over 150 people dead and thousands homeless- the developing country suffered greatly at the hands of another natural disaster this weekend. Torrential rains caused by a tropical depression battered the nation for days, triggering landslides and massive flooding. Landslides killed at least 38 people, including rescuers working to save those already buried under the mud. The GOD’S CHILD Project, one of the first organizations to assist during Tropical Storm Agatha, was again one of the first responders to this tragedy. Based in Antigua, The GOD’S CHILD Project rescued women and children trapped under a wall of mud and debris in the nearby slums of Jocotenango. Please visit our disaster relief page for more information.

Shipping Container of Donations Arrives in Guatemala

The Guatemalan staff of The GOD'S CHILD Project spent Saturday morning unloading an entire shipping container of donated items that arrived from the United States. Each year, thousands of pounds of clothing, shoes, toys, medical supplies, and other items are donated to The GOD'S CHILD Project in the United States. Those generously donated items then make the long journey to Guatemala in a shipping container, which is unloaded into storage with excitement by the Guatemalan staff members. The clothing and shoes are distributed in large clothing distribution events throughout the country; while the medical supplies are used by The GOD'S CHILD Project clinics in Guatemala or donated to local clinics and hospitals.
